Tony Posawatz, P.E.

Vehicle Line Director

Tony Posawatz, P. E., currently serves as Vehicle Line Director for the Chevrolet Volt, GM’s Extended Range Electric Vehicle.  He was appointed to this position in March 2006 and led the development of the award-winning Chevy Volt concept car introduced at the North American International Auto Show in January 2007.  Posawatz continues to help lead the development of the 2011 model year production Volt as well as other related future business initiatives. 

Posawatz has served as a Vehicle Line Director for several GM models over the past 11 years.  In this capacity, he and his product development teams have delivered many highly acclaimed and innovative products like the Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Avalanche, 2002 Motor Trend Truck of the Year.  His teams have amassed seven General Motors Chairman’s Honors Program awards for excellence and have overseen the development of cars and trucks from concept initiation to production/market launch in four countries.  Posawatz was recently named Co-Chairman of the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA); www.electricdrive.org. EDTA is the trade association accelerating battery, hybrid, plug-in, and fuel cell electric drive technologies and infrastructure.

As Planning Director for the Full-size Truck (FST) business, Posawatz helped grow GM’s FST portfolio from 1.1M to 1.7M units of capacity annually by 2003 with many new products.  The many product innovations attributed to his teams have also garnered numerous prestigious awards including multiple Popular Mechanics Design & Engineering awards, a consecutive string of J. D. Power APEAL awards & 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place finishes in the 2005 J. D. Power Initial Quality Survey (IQS2) for the mid-size car segment.

Posawatz has been with GM for more than 25 years.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from Wayne State University in 1982 as a General Motors Scholar & Engineering Intern.  He also received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1986 from Dartmouth College (The Amos Tuck School) supported by a General Motors Graduate Fellowship.

Posawatz is a State of Michigan licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) and has held the accreditation of ASQC Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).  He holds many other professional distinctions and has had many diverse assignments within GM including Quality Engineer, Production Foreman, Plant Area Manager and Finance Director with the Corporate Finance Staff.

Posawatz is married to an engineer and has two active sons.  He enjoys coaching youth sports and mentoring young people.
