HUNGARY
AUTOMOTIVE OPERATIONS
Opel Hungary
The plant in Szentgotthárd,
western Hungary, is wholly owned by Adam Opel AG. Production capacity
of the engine plant is increasing gradually. In 1999 , with the
introduction of Saturday and Sunday shifts (rolling four shift
pattern) the engine production reached 511 813 units of 1.4, 1.6,
and 1.8 liter, 16-valve ECOTEC engines. These engines are exported
for installation into Opel cars built in Europe. The Opel Hungary
cylinder head plant (completed in September 1996) built 352 564
cylinder heads in 1999.
The Astra production in Szentgotthárd
phased out at the end of 1998. In 1999 Opel Hungary still assembled
4008 Vectras for Chinese export before fully stopping this activity.
The building of the car assembly plant is being rebuilt for a
new project announced in 1998: a 230 million DM transmission plant
scheduled to start production in 2001. With the completion of
the new facility, the total investment in Opel Hungary will reach
DM 1 billion.
In Hungary, the car sales grew with
almost 30% in 1998. In this growing market Opel's market share
was 15.1 % with car sale of 20 643 (18.396 in 1998) maintaining
its number two position. With this 15.1 percent market share,
Hungary has one of the highest single market shares for Opel in
Europe.
